132: Acute Coronary Syndrome:
A Nursing Perspective
© 2014 |
|
Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, causing approximately 1.5 million heart attacks and 500,000 deaths per year. In addition, over a million patients of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular procedures are discharged each year. Overall, patients recovering from heart disease-related surgeries account for approximately half of the acute care hospital population, including diagnostics and either medical management or invasive interventions such as angioplasty, stent placement, or bypass surgery.
This four-part series provides a comprehensive view of the care nurses need to provide to individuals with acute coronary syndrome in inpatient and outpatient settings. The patients are then followed during their post-procedure period as well as during cardiac rehabilitation. In addition, there is an emphasis on the need for and value of patient and family education. Animation and real-time video of operative procedures are used to enhance the didactic material. |
